Our Story
39 years of comics, community, and passion
The Founder's Story
Art Massa was 7 years old and didn't speak a word of English when his family left Italy after World War II. His uncle gave him a stack of 10-cent comic books, which helped him learn English and sparked a lifelong passion. Four decades later, he fulfilled his childhood dream by opening The Eye Opener in 1987.
Art believed that comics should be read for enjoyment—not as investments, but as stories to be loved. This philosophy shaped The Eye Opener into a welcoming space for collectors and casual readers alike.
“Comics should be read for enjoyment. That's what they're for.”
— Art Massa
For nearly four decades, Art built more than just a business—he created a community gathering place where generations of Connecticut comic fans discovered their love of the medium. Whether you were a serious collector hunting for a rare Silver Age issue or a kid spending your allowance on the latest Spider-Man, Art treated everyone with the same warmth and enthusiasm.
